Why Line Twist Ruins Your Fishing Day
You've just tied on your favorite lure, made a perfect cast — and your line immediately coils up like a spring. Line twist is one of the most common and frustrating problems anglers face, and it almost always starts at the spool. The good news? It's 100% preventable if you spool your reel correctly.
In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to spool a spinning reel without line twist, step by step.

What Causes Line Twist?
Line twist happens when the line coming off your filler spool rotates in the opposite direction from your reel's bail. Spinning reels wind line in a circular motion, so if your line spool isn't oriented correctly during spooling, every rotation of the bail adds a small twist to the line. Over time, those twists add up — causing tangles, reduced casting distance, and weak knots.
Step-by-Step: How to Spool a Spinning Reel Without Line Twist
Step 1 – Match the Line Lay Direction
Lay your filler spool flat on the floor or a table. Look at the direction your reel's bail rotates when you turn the handle. The line should come off the filler spool in the same rotational direction. If your bail rotates clockwise, the line should peel off the filler spool clockwise as well.
Step 2 – Thread the Line Through the Guides
Run the line from your filler spool through all the rod guides, starting from the tip and working down to the reel. Open the bail on your spinning reel and tie the line to the spool arbor using an arbor knot. Close the bail.
Step 3 – Apply Light Tension
This is the step most anglers skip — and it's critical. As you reel in line, apply light, consistent tension between the filler spool and the first rod guide using your thumb and forefinger. This keeps the line tight on the spool and prevents loose coils that cause tangles later.
Step 4 – Check for Twist After 15–20 Turns
After reeling in about 15–20 cranks, let some slack line hang between the reel and your fingers. If it coils up, flip the filler spool over — you have the orientation wrong. If it hangs straight, you're good to continue.
Step 5 – Fill to the Right Level
Fill your spool to within about 1/8 inch of the spool lip. Underfilling reduces casting distance; overfilling causes line to spill off and tangle. Most spinning reels have a line capacity printed on the spool to guide you.
The Easier Way: Use a Line Spooler
Doing this by hand works, but it's slow, inconsistent, and hard on your fingers — especially if you're spooling multiple reels. That's exactly why we built the Fish On Spooler PRO.

Pro Tips to Avoid Line Twist Long-Term
- Re-spool regularly — Monofilament and fluorocarbon develop memory over time. Replace line at least once a season.
- Use the LSER attachment — Our LSER Line Saver & End Reversal Attachment lets you flip your line end-for-end to get double the life out of your fishing line.
- Avoid spinning lures without a swivel — In-line spinners and certain soft plastics can add twist during fishing. Use a quality ball-bearing swivel to prevent this.
- Strip and re-spool after a bad tangle — If you've had a major bird's nest, the line is likely twisted. Strip it off and start fresh.
Ready to Never Deal With Line Twist Again?
Whether you're spooling one reel or twenty, the right technique — and the right tool — makes all the difference. The Fish On Spooler PRO takes the guesswork out of spooling so you can spend more time fishing and less time fighting your line.
